The history of Malta is intimately tied with the
history of Valletta Grand Harbour.
It was the Harbour's natural magnificence, which persuaded the Knight's
of St.John to come here in 1530, and to make the Island a vital defence
post in the struggle raging at the time between the Cross and the Crescent.
The Harbour wears a line of fortifications like a girdle. These massive
constructions were built by the Knights and they rank as one of the most
enduring monuments to Valletta Grand Harbour their rule.
On an island packed with beauty and interest, the Harbour provides a memorable
introduction to what lies in store for Malta's guests.
In the more recent years the Quays in the Valletta
Grand Harbour serve for the berthing of cruise ships. The new Passenger
Terminal, which is today known as the 'Valletta Waterfront', was built
in the 19th Century and has undergone various restoration and modernisation
modifications to make it host to thousands of visitors each year.
Visitors may avail themselves of an array of shopping opportunities inside
the main terminal building from where non-EU passport holders may also
purchase duty free items. The Valletta Waterfront project was awarded
a top prize for cultural heritage by the pan-European Federation for Heritage.
